Why we fall out (of love)

We hear so many disheartening stories of ministries splitting, members changing churches, Facebook groups (including chistian groups) with so much drama, marriage counsellors getting divorced, group members throwing shades, gossip, malice etc. Many times happening within what we call the “body of Christ”.

What is going on? What are we doing? Whom are we deceiving? Where is the love? Indeed, would Christ meet faith on earth when he returns? (Luke 18:8i)

This has been strongly impressed upon my heart for a while and became clearer this week. The most dangerous five letter word creeps in sneakily and takes a comfortable spot in our hearts and pushes away love. It is  P-R-I-D-E, sometimes so subtle and humble (do you see the contrast?), sometimes so arrogant.

We start out with a seeming clear purpose or intention of bringing glory to God as a minister, church leader, choir master, Christian blogger/vlogger, gospel artist, Christian actor, facilitator etc or showing love through our facebook group, whatsapp group, social media involvement, church. Sharing a common goal at the start but then like David (1 Chronicles 21ii) we get caught up in counting then growing the numbers (followers, subscribers, friends, members, income, offering, fans). We get distracted by the fame (views, likes, comments, shares, respect, mentions, retweets, authority, awards, buildings). Then we lose focus, change our strategy, get competitive, demand for respect, juggle up content, introduce new things outside of the goal or God’s blueprint at the start. And gradually push God (love) out of the picture, without even realising it. We fall out of love, we fall out of the plan and eventually start to fall out with people around…

Like Samson, we think we still have Him on the inside but He is long gone because God resists PRIDE (1 Peter 5:5iii) And when HE is gone, things fall apart and we fall out…
